The Numinbah Valley runs mainly north-south and straddles the Queensland-NSW border. On the Queensland side it is largely bounded by tall escarpments and outcroppings, gradually narrowing to a steep pass on the border. On the NSW side the road follows the land as it falls away down to Chillingham and Murwillumbah beyond.
